Steven Marsh BA
Steven has been with Scott Duff and co-since 1983 when he qualified as a solicitor. He became a partner in 1986 and has specialised in representing clients in court proceedings.
His particular specialism is in personal injury law where he has represented many hundreds of clients in securing substantial compensation following accidents and injuries. He also undertakes clinical negligence work and has been a member of the Law Society specialist Personal Injury Scheme since 1994.
In addition Steven has extensive experience of a wide range of civil litigation including contract and property disputes and housing possession work. He also continues to work as a police and court duty solicitor and undertakes both criminal prosecution and defence work throughout Cumbria
When not in court he enjoys outdoor pursuits, climbing and tennis
Fiona Marsh MA
Fiona obtained her Law degree at Cambridge University and came to Penrith from the North East in 1983 with her husband Steven when she qualified as a Solicitor. She joined Scott Duff & Co.in 1988.
Fiona has always specialised in property law and over the years has dealt with the sales and purchases of thousands of pubs, shops, farms and building plots as well as homes in Cumbria and further afield.
Outside of work Fiona enjoys fell-walking and family holidays, and has recently taken up trail-running.
Suzanne Connell LLB
Suzanne is a specialist in personal injury and medical negligence cases with over 20 years experience successfully representing hundreds of clients/claimants. She is a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and was accepted onto the Law Society Personal Injury Panel in May 2004.
Suzanne was born and educated in South Cumbria until the age of 18 when she went to study Law at the University of Reading.
She completed her Legal Practice Certificate at the College of Law in Chester then joined Scott Duff and Co in March 1998 as a Trainee Solicitor, qualifying in March 2000 and becoming a Partner in the firm in May 2003.
Suzanne is married with two children and outside work she enjoys foreign travel, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Cheryl Corson BA(Hons)
Cheryl was born and educated in Carlisle. She attended the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, achieving a BA Honours degree in Law with English and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, before returning to her home city to be employed at Scott Duff & Co. as a Trainee Solicitor. She qualified as a Solicitor in July 2008, became an Associate with the company in 2013 and was appointed as a Director in 2016.
Cheryl has over 10 years experience in Civil Litigation, negotiation and court proceedings, and since 2016 she has been putting these skills to use within the firm’s Family Department. Cheryl deals with all aspects of Family Law including Divorce, separation for cohabiting couples, disputes involving children as well as resolving the financial issues following a relationship breakdown.
Cheryl is a member of Resolution – first for family law.
Cheryl is a life-long Carlisle United supporter, holding a season ticket for Brunton Park, and travelling to many away games with the club. She also enjoys figure skating and going for walks in the Lakes with her husband and dogs.
David Clarke LLB
David joined Scott Duff & Co. in August 2011 following a career in telecommunications. He gained a first with honours in law with the Open University and a Diploma in Legal Practice with the College of Law. David qualified as a solicitor in September 2013 and is now based between Keswick and Penrith. David heads our private client team and specialises in wills, probate, trusts, powers of attorney and elderly client care.
David is a member of STEP and has gained STEP Diplomas in the Administration of both Estates and Trusts and STEP Advanced Certificates in both the Taxation of Trusts and Estates and also Estate and Trust Accounting.
David is a member of the Law Society’s Private Client Section.
David lives in Kendal and is happy to arrange home visits with clients living in South Lakeland.
Outside of work, David enjoys walking, reading and holidays in France.
Cheryl Christian LLB
Cheryl Christian qualified as a solicitor in Derbyshire in 1987 and returned to Cumbria in 1989; she joined Scott Duff & Co. in 1995. Cheryl specialises in advice to elderly clients, the preparation of wills and the administration of estates and is a member of the Law Society Private Client Section and an Accredited Member of Solicitors for the Elderly.
Out of the office Cheryl has been a lifelong member and active supporter of Girl Guiding, assisting the running of a Guide Unit in Carlisle. In her spare time Cheryl enjoys sailing, cycling and walking.
Philippa Cullen LLB
Philippa qualified as a solicitor in 1994 and has specialised in Family Law since then. She practised in London and the South East before moving with her family to Cumbria in 2006 where she joined the family department at Scott Duff & Co. She specialises in the financial aspects of relationship breakdown, including divorce and cohabitation cases, and in resolving arrangements for children after separation.
Philippa is a trained Mediator, accredited by the Family Mediation Council, a Collaborative Lawyer (please see our Family Law page for more information), a member of Resolution and a Resolution Accredited Specialist.
Gill Hinckley LLB(Hons)
Gill was educated at Keswick School and Manchester University, qualifying as a solicitor in 1988. She has always practised in Cumbria, and lives in Keswick.
Gill is based at the Keswick office dealing with all types of residential property including flats, retirement properties and new builds. She also deals with the sale and purchase of commercial properties including guest houses and shops.
Out of the office Gill is involved in amateur theatre and rugby union.
Alex Keegan FCILEx
Alex moved to Cumbria from the North East after she qualified as a Legal Executive in 2005.
She is based in the Carlisle office and specialises in property law.
Alex has a commercial property background and advises clients on residential sales and purchases, remortgages, commercial leases and land transactions. She has a broad client base of companies, partnerships, financial institutions, owner managed businesses and individuals.
Claire Maxwell FCILEx
Claire Maxwell Associate and Chartered Legal Executive and fully accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly.
Claire has over 14 years’ experience in private client work, specialising in Wills, Probate, inheritance tax planning and Court of Protection work which, includes Lasting Powers of Attorney, registering Enduring Powers of Attorney, Living Wills and Deputyship. Claire has worked within the area of private client law since 2004 and has helped thousands of families with Wills, powers of attorney and estate administration including estates with cross border elements and farming and business estates involving claiming Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief where relevant.
Claire studied by distanced learning while working full time as a legal secretary and was admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives in 2009. Claire is keen to progress her career and as a result obtained fully accredited membership of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) and is one of only three fully accredited members of SFE in Penrith.
In addition, Claire is also an associate member of the Law Society’s Private Client section. Claire has also completed several professional development courses in probate and estate administration and Court of Protection work and has also trained as a dementia friends champion
She became an Associate of the firm in 2016.
Outside work, Claire is a keen sports fan and is a supporter of Glasgow Celtic and is also an avid follower of MotoGP. She also enjoys charitable work have undertaken a 13,000 ft tandem skydive on behalf of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society and more recently an abseil down the civic centre in Carlisle and was a member of the Knighton & District Rotary Club before relocating to the area in June 2014 to be closer to family in Scotland. Since relocation Claire has also been involved with Eden Carers.
Susan Wilkinson MLaw
Susan is an Assistant Solicitor with the firm specialising in all aspects of Private Client work including; Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney. She offers a practical, friendly and caring approach, guiding clients through what can be difficult discussions and times. Susan is a Dementia Friend and along with our private client team has undertaken additional training with the Alzheimer's Society allowing her to offer informed advice.
Originally from Cumbria, Susan moved to Newcastle in 2011 to attend University, graduating from Northumbria University in 2015 with a First Class Masters degree in Law. She returned to Cumbria in September 2015 to join Scott Duff & Co. as a Trainee Solicitor and upon qualification in October 2017 joined the Private Client Department.
Since qualification in October 2017 Susan has assisted clients across all areas of private client work. She has dealt with a range of probate matters from simple low value estates to more complex farming estates involving full IHT 400 returns and applications for BPR and APR. Susan has also acted in the preparation of a range of will matters, including advice relating to potential IPFDA claims, IHT planning and the inclusion of trusts. Susan has assisted clients in the preparation of LPAs and also in Deputyship applications including applications for Property and Financial Affairs Deputyship Orders, an order appointing a second trustee and an application to amend an existing Deputyship Order.
Outside of the office Susan enjoys travelling, going to the theatre, and spending time with family and friends.
Shaun Martin MLaw
Shaun is an Assistant Solicitor specialising in property matters based in our Penrith Office.
Originally from Carlisle, Shaun was educated at Trinity School in Carlisle and Northumbria University in Newcastle, graduating with an MLAW (Exempting) Degree in 2013. Returning to Carlisle following University, Shaun commenced his Training Contract in 2016 having previously been employed by the Cumberland Building Society. After qualifying as a Solicitor, Shaun joined the Property Department of Scott Duff & Co in May 2018.
Outside of work, Shaun plays rugby for an amateur side in Carlisle and enjoys raising money for charity, having completed a 10k obstacle course for the Alzheimer’s Society and recently taking part in a charity rugby match and a skydive, both for Teenage Cancer Trust.
Debbie Stalker Manager
Debbie joined Scott Duff & Co. in 1992. After spending 15 years as Legal Assistant to Andrew Duff, Debbie went on to managing her own case load of Personal Injury and Criminal Injuries Compensation claims, before becoming our Office Manager in 2013.
Debbie is responsible for the firm’s Human Resources-related matters as well as recruitment, health and safety and management of the firm’s office premises. She enjoys family holidays, reading and spending time with her husband and daughter.
Megan Graham MLaw
Megan graduated from Northumbria University in July 2016 with a Masters degree in law. She joined Scott Duff & Co in October 2017 as a Trainee Solicitor after having spent a year working for a local pensions provider as a Property Administrator.
She is currently working within the personal injury department based in the Penrith office.
Sophie Dodds MLaw
Sophie graduated from Northumbria University in July 2014 with a Masters degree in law. She then went on to work for a Personal Injury law firm in Newcastle as a claims assistant before working for the travel company TUI in various different roles.
Sophie joined Scott Duff & Co. in November 2017 as a Trainee Solicitor and is currently working in the Personal Injury and Family department based in the Carlisle office. Outside of work Sophie enjoys travelling, keeping fit and spending time with friends and family.
